Botswana Worlds 2011 : ALL teams on Wait List APPROVED!

Greetings!

We are promoting all teams on the wait list. So every institution on the waiting list, regardless of your order, can now get more teams into the tournament.

This means

– Institutions waitlisted with no teams approved now have all their teams approved

– Institutions who were allowed one team are now allowed to send more

– Institutions who have fully paid for 3 teams but want to send more can apply – by writing in and indicating an interest to do so (see below)

– Institutions who have not yet registered for the tournament but want to now can do so – by writing in and indicating an interest to do so (see below)

Instructions

1. All institutions who want to send teams should send an email to grahamsowa @gmail.com. You should tell him

a) who you are and how many teams you currently have paid for (which we will verify)

b) how many extra teams you want

c) when you can pay for them

He will then let you know how many additional teams you can bring and after that you should initiate payment. You will be given one week from the date of approval to send money. If you don’t, we will offer your spot to someone else. Do not initiate payment until Graham tells you that you can – else you may be paying for a slot that does not exist. We will not be refunding or honoring unrequested and unapproved payments.

You MUST activate your online account and upload your proof of payments there or email scanned copies to finance @botswanaworlds.com. Payment information is available here : http://botswanaworlds.com/node/35

When allocating extra teams we will

a) prioritize institutions who have fewer teams in the tournament over institutions with more. So those of you who were on the wait list or those of you who do not have any teams in the tournament will be prioritized. We will you a one week head-start to grab these spots – after the 29th of September institutions who already have 3 teams will be given more teams.

b) try to distribute remaining spots evenly among those who want them. So rather than giving 3 teams to one institution who already has 3 teams, we will give 1 team to 3 institutions who already have 3 teams.

c) use first come first serve. We will also be super strict with payments. The reason why we are behind our deadlines is we’ve been very lenient with giving extensions. But if we do not get proof of payment within a week, we will drop your team and offer that spot to another. If you pay later, that money will not be refunded to you. Neither will deposits.

2. From the 5th of October, institutions that have not registered at all for Botswana Worlds will be able to register to attend. The registration website will be opened for new registrants. The online system will tell you how many teams you have or if you are on the waiting list. If you have teams accepted, you have one week from that point to initiate payment.

Hope this is clear. If you have questions, please email grahamsowa @gmail.com or finance @botswanaworlds.com

Cheers

Logan

Asian Schools Debating Championship Results

Last September, the La Salle Debate Society (LSDS) and the DLSU Worlds
Organizing Committee hosted the 2nd Asian Schools Debate Championship
(ASDC), a prestigious debate competition aimed towards building a stronger
high school debate community in the Asian region. For five days, De La
Salle University  became the convening place and melting pot of brilliant
young minds from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand,
Malaysia, and the Philippines.

ASDC fostered high-spirited and fierce competition for debaters,
adjudicators and public speakers alike, having a total of seven
preliminary rounds and the usual break rounds starting from the Octofinals
to the Grand Finals, and elimination and finals round for the public
speaking contest.
Although LSDS had to cater to young and presumably innocent high school
students, it did not hold back on the three socials during the tournament:
the  Opening Dinner, Break Night Party, and Championship Dinner. The Break
Night Party, in particular, became one of the highlights of the tournament
where the participants were treated to their own private party complete
with Mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktails) and a DJ at the 21st Floor of the
Br. Andrew Gonzalez Hall.

In the end, it boiled down to a heated round between Ateneo de Manila High
School (ADMHS 2) of the Philippines and Daewon Foreign Language School
(DAEWON 1) of South Korea during the Grand Finals on the motion, "THBT
governments should not be allowed to own media companies." The Philippines
held on to the championship title one more time as ADMHS 2 was announced
the victor of the 2nd ASDC in a 6-5 split decision. However, DAEWON 1 did
not go home empty handed as Jeewon Yoo was awarded as the Best Speaker of
the finals and of the tournament. The 2nd ASDC was a milestone in its
hopefully long string of running years as LSDS turns over the tournament
to Daewon Foreign Language who won the right to  host the 3rd ASDC over
Claret School of Quezon City (Philippines) during the  first Asian High
School Council Meeting presided by the De La Salle Worlds  Convenor and
ASDC Founder, Dino de Leon.

Certainly, the whole Asian High School  debate community shall be waiting
for the 3rd ASDC with anticipation of what kind of debating culture and
twist Seoul will be able to offer.

Botswana Worlds Reg Update : Teams Need to Pay!

Dear Worlds Participants.

Now a week has passed since the deadline for the final payment.  We are publishing two lists.  The first list is of people who paid the deposit but made NO FINAL PAYMENT.  The second list is of people that paid a full deposit for the number of teams that they registered, but DID NOT make a FULL final payment (these lists are on the front page of www.botswanaworlds.com).

Now, due to the large volume of emails me are dealing with and deadlines we must keep there might be some mistakes in this list.  If you happen to see your institutions name on the list and don’t believe it belongs there please follow this two step process:

1) Go to the registration website for Botswana Worlds (register.botswanaworlds.com) and log into your registration account: see if your payment details are correct

2) Email finance@botswanaworlds.com with details of what is wrong, if it is an issue of payment ATTACH the payment proofs (if you have emailed me, Graham, directly in the past don’t do it this time, I’m traveling and you won’t get your problem solved).

I also know some of you had legitimate excuses that we honored with extensions.  If this is the case and you find yourself on this list please kindly remind us and don’t worry, you won’t be dropped.

Everyone else has until September 16th to solve any problems and send us their proof of payments (we need to receive the proof of payment by the 16th).  After that you will have forfeited your deposit and be dropped from the registration list.

Teams promoted from the wait list who have not contacted us to confirm that they will be accepting their spots are also being removed from the wait list. Teams that do not initiate payment by the 16th will similarly be removed.

Sincerely

Botswana Worlds Registration Team

Guest judges at PAUDC

This is a reminder about the guest judge spots available at this year’s Pan African Champs, to be held in Windhoek, Namibia from 4-10 December. If you’re an experienced judge heading to Worlds in Botswana, and you’ll be in the area in early December, we encourage you to think about coming through to our tournament.

PAUDC is a relatively new tournament, aimed at spreading debating in Africa. It’s close to being the largest tournament on the continent (SA Nats is about the same size), and has by far the widest range of teams. The programme is heavy on training and development, but PAUDC also acts as a prep tournament for African teams going to Worlds.

The Org Com has given us a small budget to waive reg fees for suitably experienced judges. If you’re interested, send a mail and CV to Joe Roussos (the CA) at joe.roussos AT gmail.com.

Cheers,
The PAUDC Adj team

The 9th NLS Debate

The National Law School Debate (NLS-D), now on its 9th year, is India’s biggest, most prestigious and wildest parliamentary debating tournament. With over 60 teams and participation from across South Asia, a world-class Adjudication Core, and the strongest pool of in-house judges in South Asia, NLS-D raises the bar every year.

The Literary and Debating Society of the National Law School, Bangalore, is pleased to open registration. for the 9th National Law School Debate, 2010 to be held from the 6th to the 10th of November, 2010. The NLS Debate has successfully established itself as India (and the subcontinent’s) biggest and most competitive debating tournament, which has raised the standard of debate in South Asia in the Asian Parliamentary Debate format. Through the introduction of international adjudication core members and teams, the NLS Debate has always been the trendsetter in the South Asian debate circuit.

This year, we’re hoping to continue that tradition and alongside our usual legendary break night and stellar adjudication core, we are also trying to lighten the load on your pocket – with a flat rate of registration for domestic and international participants, as well as deals worked out with our partner airline Jet Airways, we hope to make this easy to access for South East Asia, and provide a platform for a pan Asian debate.

Here’s the information you will need –
Registration for participants has two components – the basic cost of INR 600 / USD 12 that covers the rounds of debating, meals as well as the socials; this sum, following the registration, will be expected to be completed through a wire transfer. The remaining sum can be paid upon arrival in Bangalore.

The remaining registration amount of INR 1000 / USD 20 shall cover accommodation in Bangalore for the duration of the tournament, and ‘crash’ accommodation can also be availed of, which would entail sharing of a hostel room at a reduced cost.

The details regarding the registration payment as well as the accommodation shall be part of, amongst other things, the tournament package that will be sent to every successfully registering institution.

Further, anyone wishing to avail subsidized fares is urged to mail us immediately at lnd.nlsiu@gmail.com, so the information can be forwarded to our Airlines partner.

So, why should you come to the NLS Debate?

1) It’s BIG – With a team cap of 80, and an institution cap of 3 teams, this is South Asia’s biggest debate, showcasing the depth and breadth of debating in this part of the subcontinent. The returns are proportionally huge, with prize money totaling to INR 150,000 / USD 3300.

2) Our adjudication – We have South Asia’s most experienced Adjudication pool, which has members that have broken at UADC, AUDC, All-Asians, WUPID and Worlds – all under one roof, and all of them will be around to judge 7 preliminary and 4 break rounds of Octos, Quarters, Semis and Finals.

Adjudication Core
Logandran Balavijendran – Asian Champion and a Worlds Chief Adjudicator not once, but TWICE. He’s going to be the CA of WUDC in Botswana this year, and we’re tickled to have him come down for NLS D. Oh, and if you’re looking for more about him, he has also been an Australs CA, been a DCA for UADC and AUDC, has been an Australs finalist, a DCA at the Asians BP, a Worlds Octofinalist and a Worlds top 20 speaker.

Suthen Tate Thomas – he has been an Asian Champion, a Worlds DCA, an Australs finalist, a Worlds Octofinalist, a DCA for the Australs, and has been one of the shining examples of Asian debating at its best across the many years that he has been an active force in the Asian and Australasian Debate Circuit. Is also one of the best drinkers of beer, and starter of many infamous ‘boat races’ involving beer.

We’ve also invited Ahyoung Kim and Satya Venugopal to come down as our guests for this tournament. Both are slated to be DCAs for UADC 2011 next year. Satya was the best speaker at UADC this year as well as a finalist, while Ahyoung is the CA for Australs next year, and has been a Worlds Quarterfinalist judge. Joining them, we’re going to have various NLS Alumni who’ve taken the tournament to where it now is.

3) It’s FUN – With a legendary break night party with flowing alcohol that is the social event of the debate calendar in addition to an opening night dinner, and a closing Championship party along with all sorts of crazy happenings (such as quizzes, a masters tournament, etc.) Also, the NLS Debate is starting right after Diwali, and international teams would be advised to drop down a day early to chill out and watch India’s grandest festival, the festival of lights and joy (and delicious food and sweets).

4) Our experience – We have been doing this for the last 8 years, and each year our level of hospitality has ensured that each team gets picked up and dropped, gets accommodation and meals for the entire duration of the tournament. We shall leave no stone unturned to ensure that your time at the NLS D is absolutely enjoyable.

5) For novices – Knowing that not everyone has debated before, we know that some of you might question the wisdom of coming to NLS D if you’ve never done this before. We recognise that this isn’t just about the fun and the competition – it is about developing debating and the kind of skills that go with it. Mindful of that, we have a separate novice break for all those who haven’t done this before (or have only done it once before), and there will be a separate break for novice teams with Quarter, Semi and Final rounds.

IMPORTANT – Registration:
Domestic
International
Facebook Group

Contact Information –

2. Pranav Ravikumar, Joint Convenor – +91 99867 86165
3. Vipul Nanda, Press and Publicity – +91 80950 24731

We look forward to seeing you in Bangalore!
