Many Different IDEAs Explained

I have been asking this question for a long time – how many International Debate Education Associations are there and how are they different? I found a very substantive answer at the IDEA website. -Editor

Governance

IDEA is registered in the Netherlands as an international, not-for-profit, public benefit organization, in accordance with the laws of the Netherlands and in the United States as a public charity recognized as a 501(c)3. The registered offices of IDEA are located in Amsterdam, New York City, London and Brussels.

IDEA Netherlands (hereafter referred to as IDEA Amsterdam), IDEA Inc. (hereafter referred to as IDEA New York), IDEA London and IDEA Central are separate organizations that operate independently yet cooperate informally with each other. This website, a joint presentation, is intended to promote both organizations’ interests while maintaining their respective transparency.

IDEA NL
As a membership organization, IDEA Amsterdam is governed democratically by a General Assembly. The General Assembly meets at least once a year, usually though special meetings may be called when needed. Between General Assembly meetings, the Board of Directors has all the necessary power to oversee day-to-day management of IDEA.
The General Assembly has the ultimate authority to:
Elect and remove members of the Board of Directors
Approve and amend the statutes of IDEA Amsterdam
Approve the annual budget of IDEA Amsterdam
Approve and amend the internal regulations of IDEA Amsterdam
Decide on the overall policy and objectives of IDEA Amsterdam
Decide to dissolve, liquidate, or reorganize IDEA Amsterdam, in whole or in part, in accordance with Dutch law.

The IDEA Amsterdam Board of Directors is elected by the General Assembly to renewable two-year terms. Members serve on a volunteer basis, and all actions taken by the Board are subject to the review of the General Assembly. IDEA Amsterdam’s statutes stipulate that one member of the Board must be a legal resident of the Netherlands. Furthermore, through 2005, the Open Society Institute shall have one representative of its own choosing on the board. The Board elects from its own members a President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary.
With the General Assembly’s consent, the Board of Directors may:
Name an Advisory Board, whose purpose is to offer expert advice to IDEA. Like the Board of Directors, Advisory Board members are not paid but may be reimbursed for expenses incurred in the course of their services.
Name an Executive Director to administer IDEA; the Board may also approve the hiring of an administrative staff.
In 1999, the Board named Noel Selegzi, of the United States to serve as the Transitional Executive Director of IDEA Amsterdam.
IDEA Amsterdam Board Members:
President: Andrej Schulcz
Vice President: Logan Balavijendran
Secretary: Lazar Pop Ivanov
Treasurer: Noel Selegzi
Members: Virginija Pakšiene, Ton Sonneveldt, Jasmin Ceco, Maja Nenadovic

IDEA New York
As a public charity in the United States, IDEA New York is governed by its Board of Directors that has the ultimate authority to:
Provide direction and initiative to advance the vision of IDEA New York
Set policy and strategic direction for IDEA New York
Hire the Executive Director
Approve annual organizational plan and budget
Review Board structure and as appropriate, approve changes and make necessary amendments to the by-laws
Full fiduciary responsibilities as stewards of IDEA New York financial and other resources
IDEA New York Board Members
President: Dirk Olin
Vice-President: Eric DiMichele
Treasurer: Martin Greenwald
Members: David Douglass, Joe Zompetti, Helen Grosso, Vincent Grosso, Noel Selegzi, Jeanne Chen, Chris Meagher

IDEA London
A public charity in England & Wales, IDEA London is governed by its Board of Directors and its objects are to:
conduct, operate, co-ordinate, participate in, and support educational, charitable, humanitarian, and other publicly beneficial programs and activities, whether they are programs and activities of IDEA or of other physical persons and/or legal entities, or subdivisions thereof, that:
further the goals and objectives of IDEA;
foster the development of open society, democracy, democratic values, freedom, and human rights;
advance the collective common goals and objectives of its members, by enhancing donor potential for, increasing collective credibility of, and improving the efficiency of programs and activities conducted and operated by idea members.
conduct, operate, co-ordinate, participate in, as well as support other programs and activities as the board of directors may, in its sole discretion, deem constructive and appropriate in furtherance of the goals and objectives of idea, and in keeping with the provisions of UK charity law governing not-for-profit and publicly beneficial activities.
IDEA London Board Members
President: Belinda Lawson
Members: Dea Markova, Alex Deane, Noel Selegzi, Tim Bentinck

IDEA Central
The IDEA Central Foundation is registered in Belgium. The Foundation’s goals and objectives are entirely devoid of a profit-making aim and include, but are not limited to, the following:
fostering an open society by supporting activities that promote and sustain the free exchange of ideas, tolerance, critical thinking and international cooperation;
developing, organising and promoting debate and debate-related activities in communities throughout the world;
promoting mutual understanding and democracy globally by supporting discussion and active citizenship locally; and
striving to cultivate and nurture an engaged, democratic citizenry as well as the next generation of civic leadership throughout the world by offering young people the opportunity to debate the important issues facing them while underscoring the notions of tolerance, international cooperation, and freedom of expression.
The Foundation will also aim to provide a coordination and strategic role, as well as to oversee legal and other governance matters, for the IDEA Network.

World Debate Institute Programs for 2012 Announced

2012 Events Announced – a Lot of Them!

2012 is shaping up to be a very active year for the World Debate Institute as it promotes debating all around the world, in many formats and in a variety of languages. The World Debate Institute is not a funding agent, we don’t pay for things, but we do supply expertise, personnel, curriculum and planning for events people want to offer, as well as supporting a number of well-established events.

In January we will be announcing the 4th Thinking and Speaking a Better World conference which will take place in Doha, Qatar in January 2013. Lots of details coming after the launch.

WDI will be assisting at a University debate tournament and workshop taking place in Bosnia Hercgovina March 12-18 2012. It will be the first major university debate event in the country and is arranged through cooperation with WDI partner ZIP Slovenia along with local organizers.

Alfred Snider, WDI director, has been named to be the Chief Adjudicator at the US Universities Debating Championship to take place at Willamette University in Oregon 13-15 April, where 200 teams are expected to compete for the USA national title. For more information go tohttp://www.willamette.edu/cla/debate/events/2011_2012/USU2012.html .

The Faculty of Organizaional Sciences at the University of Belgrade is planning a workshop on ecological advocacy to take place in Belgrade, Serbia 18-22 June 2012. The faculty has partnered with WDI previously on several events, including a very successful summer training program in persuasion. More details coming.

WDI will again partner with ZIP Slovenia in sponsoring the World Schools Debate Academy to be held in Slovenia 29 July-7 August 2012. This successful program brings high school students from all over the globe to learn and develop in a week long workshop that concludes with a tournament, For more information, to go tohttp://debateacademy.net/Debate_Academy/WSDA_Slovenia.html . This time we are expecting over 100 students.

WDI will cooperate with the Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont to host a workshop for Vermont school students 25-30 June 2012. The focus will be on at-risk students who do not usually have such beneficial summer programs. A website will go up soon.

Romanian debate organization ARGO is holding an international schools invitational tournament 26-30 July 2012 and WDI director Snider has been invited to be the Chief Adjudicator. Plans are to attend this event, but details are still in the process of becoming. Their website is athttp://www.argodebate.ro/ .

WDI will once again be an important part of sponsoring the 2012 Spanish language university world debate championship, the Campeonato Mundial Universitario de Debate to be held 5-11 August in Santiago Chile at Universidad Andres Bello. Last year’s first ever event was a huge success and this one should be bigger and better than ever.

WDI will be sponsoring the North American Debate Academy (formerly East Debate Institute) 19-24 August 2012. This FREE top quality debate workshop has been growing each year and attracting excellent faculty. See more details athttp://debateacademy.net/Debate_Academy/EDI_Vermont.html .

There are many other plans in the works, so keep checking back for news!

GUU Parliamentary Invite‏

As I’m sure many of you know, IVs are but a mere hobby for debaters of the Grand Old Union. GUU debating is really all about Parliamentaries. And, as we spend so much of our time explaining to you what they are, and how much fun they are, we stopped for a minute and realised we are being selfish. You should all get to join in the fun… but just for one night.

We invite you to enter a strange new world where the only Economist we care about is Mr Callum MacMaster, where facts are mainly ignored, and where marks for style include how well you can iron a shirt.

On Friday 16th March, we are holding the final Parliamentary of the 2011-12 season, where the Whig Club shall be in government, lead by the Hon. Property Ladder, known to many of you as Mr John McKee.

There are five clubs in the Chamber – and each has one space for a guest to speak in a round during the Evening Session. Beyond that, every Club is opening membership to any guest who wishes to join for the day to sit on the benches and ask POIs to the other Clubs. If you would like to speak, selection will be made by the leader of each Club. Get in touch if you wish to speak and I shall pass on details. There will also be a small prize for the best guest speaker.

The Parliamentary starts at 3pm and the Afternoon Session ends around 7pm, at which point we have dinner. If you wish to join us for dinner (to which you are most welcome) the cost is £10 BUT we need numbers by Tuesday 13 March. The Evening Session will commence around 8.30pm, and finish (roughly) 1am. As it is the last Parliamentary, the Clerks then retire to work out who has won, while everyone else consumes a large volume of complimentary alcohol. Hopefully, the results shall be available within a few hours, and will then be announced by candlelight in the Debates Chamber in the wee small hours.

We guarantee a fantastic night of true GUU hospitality, and we’d love you to take your chance to join in.

There is no charge, other than for dinner if you wish to attend. You will receive lots of free alcohol in the Evening Session, and we can offer crash if required. Please let us know if you’re coming in advance to have an estimate of numbers. Dress code for the Evening Session is officially black tie, though a suit shall suffice. Please note that to sit in the Chamber, the dress code is a minimum of shirt and trousers (female equivalent: office wear) and there is a strict no denim and no trainers policy. To speak, you must be wearing a tie and ideally a jacket.

Any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with myself at kirstykakanskas[at]gmail[dot]com, or the Debates Convener at debates[at]guu[dot]co[dot]uk.

The guide to Parliamentary debating can be found at the following link –
http://www.gudialectic.co.uk/archives.html – and contains more information.

Hoping to see you there, as well as at Ancients on 2nd/3rd March (details of which can be found at http://glasgowancients2012.wordpress.com).

The tournament will see in-house representation from Nishita Vasan (again core of UADC 2012) and Vipul Nanda. However, this is not where we stop. The Xth NLS-D will see a return of the old guard, with Yaman Verma, Uttara Gharpure(adj. core MDO 2012), Siddharth ChauhanEashan GhoshKalrav MishraShivam SinghMaanav Kumar etc. flying down specially to adjudicate.
We here at the NLS-D not only offer an unrivalled opportunity for quality debating before UADC 2012 but also ensure that all of you have insane amounts of fun. With a team cap of 64, the NLS-D promises to be the experience of a lifetime.
